It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”—Helen Keller

So let’s take some time to get to know Jae Henderson better!
Who is Jae Henderson?
Jae Henderson is a highly ambitious woman that likes to write stories the inspire people to live a life that is pleasing to God while accomplishing their dreams. I basically want to encourage others to be the best person they can be by living life abundantly.
What are your passions outside of writing?
My family. I love them fiercely. Oh and food, I just love good food. Lol
Where are you from?
Tell me about life growing up. How does it affect your writing?
I grew up in a Christian household. My mother and grandmother introduced me to Jesus and His extraordinary love for us. At times, my mother could be very strict but I think I benefited greatly from it. Good behavior and excellence was expected. I carried those attributes into adulthood. I have a sign in my office that says “Failure is not an option and mediocrity is unacceptable.
When did you know you were a writer?
It happened while I was in college at The University of Memphis when I saw my name in the byline under the heading for an article I wrote for our campus newspaper for the first time. The fact that the decision maker at a publication thought that my work was good enough to be shared with the entire campus was validation for me that I was truly a writer.
What genre do you write?
I write inspirational romance. It’s the edgier side of Christian romance. I talk about God’s love for us while delving into the amazing things that can happened when men and women love each other. I like to push the envelope a little in my books. Sometimes, I think that people forget that God created sex so it isn’t a bad thing. Even in a novel that talks about God. However, He did give us criteria that outlines when we should have sex. I acknowledge those while acknowledging how our carnal desires sometimes cause us to go outside of His criteria. It makes for an exciting story that people can relate to.
What motivates you to write?
People motivate me to write. All of my books have some type of lesson in them. It is my hope that those lessons resonate with someone and help prevent them from making disastrous decisions.
How much of what you write is based on personal experiences?
Probably about 25 percent. I often take things that I have been through and embellish the situations. Some of my characters are loosely based on people I know, too. Consider it our lives on steroids!
What is your research process when preparing a book?
My research process depends on what I’m writing. For instance, the Someday trilogy contains encouraging scriptures. Therefore, I had to go to the Bible to make sure the scriptures were applicable to the situations in my books. However, as a writer you are always doing research through the observance of yourself and others. People seem to enjoy a book more when they can relate to the thoughts, feelings and actions of the characters. In order to do that, you must be in tune with people. That comes through experience and maturity. So in essence, each day I live and every situation I encounter adds to my research. I hope to write a historical novel as some point. I know that will take a lot of research and I look forward to it.
What genre do you read? What authors do you admire?
I like to read other romances in order to stay up on my genre. I enjoy all types of romance not just inspirational and Christian. Beverly Jenkins has become a favorite. She is actually the one who prompted my desire to write a historical novel.
What advice would you give others about writing & in general?
If you are planning to make money doing this make sure that you study your craft and research your genre. It’s crucial that you make sure that your book is marketable. At the same time, don’t just write for the money. Make sure that writing is something you really enjoy and are passionate about. Your passion will drive you to create a quality product with amazing stories that readers will love.
What would you like people to know that they might not know already?
That’s a good one. Most of what I want people to know can be found in my bio. Here are some tidbits people might find interesting. I used to host a radio talk show for youth and young adults, and I’ve been a professional voice over artist for over a decade. I’ve done commercials for national companies like McDonald’s, Ampro, Kroger, Ben & Jerry’s and others. I’m always looking for my next opportunity, and I would love to do major cartoons-especially an episode of The Boondocks. I love Aaron McGruder’s work. My VO website is www.jaehendersononline.com.
What are you working on and when can we expect a release?
Later this year, I will release a short story compilation of my Things Every Good Woman Should Know series. It will contain 5-6 inspirational stories that I really believe my readers will enjoy. I hope to release my next novel “Husband Wanted” in 2014. Thanks so much for dropping by! It’s been a privilege to have you in my Chat Chair!
