The Story behind my stories….

An oldie but goody!

Nikki's Spot

Marriage Ceremony Oct.15,2011 020 me2I have been a person of Faith for most of my life.  What does that mean?  I guess I mean that I just didn’t carry faith around like a good luck charm. My faith was alive through the rendering of service to others since I was thirteen years old. I moved to West Virginia when I was 17 to engage in a ministry work.  So,  I felt like I was deeply religious, solid in my faith. But, I learned the hard way that faith can diminish over time.  In 2007/2008, twenty-plus years later, my life went into a spin.  It seems that no matter how much you anticipate drawing on all that faith that you’ve been storing up like some bank account to use during a rainy day, something within you tells you that a good person shouldn’t go through storms of life.  At least that must have been my…

sequince aiken picture

Today, I get to feature author Se`Quince Aiken, a lovely author and my fellow Jersey sister too! Whenever we see her there’s always a smile.

life is a journey sequinc  surrender sequince aiken

So tell us, who is Se’Quince Aiken?

I am an eighteen year old full time student who attends a private school for my disability of cerebral palsy. I am new author who wrote and published two books: Life is a Journey (my story living with cerebral palsy) and my poetry book Surrender; my own thoughts and feelings.

Where are you from?

My home town is Rahway, New Jersey.

When did you know you were a writer?

I knew I was a writer when I received my first book in the mail. I knew it was real and I was very excited.

What motivates you to write?

My motivation is my mom. She helps me maintain my focus and guides in the direction that I need when I am trying to write. I have a habit of thinking too far ahead and my mom brings me back.

What genre do you read?

I love romance novels. I read all the Twilight Saga series. I am currently reading the Fifty Shades of Grey.

Wow! Spicy! 😉 What authors do you admire?

Stephanie Myers and Nicholas Sparks.

I like Nicholas Sparks as well! What advice would you give others about writing & for life in general?

My advice will be to never give up on your dreams. Just do it! Don’t let anyone or anything get in your way.

That’s great advice. What would you like people to know that they might not know already?

I would like people to know that I am a fighter. I work hard and try my best at everything I do. I don’t give up so easily.

Thank you so much for dropping by my book spot, Se`Quince.  I know you are an inspiration to many to not give up when faced with challenges. I think a lot of us take things for granted. Your courage has shown us the gifts we could be hiding by not striving for our dreams! I know you will be successful in achieving your future goals! ❤

Deidra D. S. Green WAS in Nikki’s Chat Chair!

“Writing is like breathing. Without it, I’d die…”

Frequently heard saying: ‘Writing is like breathing. Without it, I’d die…’

Back in the day, Deidre D. S. Green, was in my chat chair.  She is author of The Twisted Sister Series, The Suddenly Single Series, some novels and novellas and some children’s stories, her latest release is Interstate 64. This story actually comes with the disclaimer: WARNING! THIS STORY IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! EXPLICIT CONTENT!

In addition to that she is a “highly sought after as a lecturer, educator, and presenter. They leave challenged, inspired, and wanting more.”  Anyone that knows even a little about this author can see that her tagline is accurate, her pen is on fire.

She also just released her psychological thriller, Sick, Sicker, Sickest the first installment of The Chloe Daniels Mysteries:deidra sickest

Mind you these are just a few of her works!  But I needed room for the interview! So grab a beverage and let’s get into it!

Who is Deidra?

That is an excellent question. I continue to evolve every day and learn new things about myself all the time. Although most people think I am an extrovert, I am really rather introverted. I am a definite home-body and love spending time with my two children VcToryann C’Mone and Kamerron De’Athony Alexander. My passions outside of writing would have to include music, classical, gospel and old school r&b. I am a purse and shoe-aholic and love interior decorating.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from E. St. Louis, IL and currently reside in Atlanta Georgia

Tell me about life growing up. How does it affect your writing?

I had a wonderful childhood, surrounded by extended family members. I matriculated through both private and public schools and my family traveled all summer every summer when I was young. We had great experiences on the road and I had to expand my horizons intellectually and culturally during those excursions. I think because we explored so much as a family, my thinking is not boxed in to where I was raised and the environment in which I grew up despite how wonderful it was. Thinking outside the box and exploring new avenues to write in is how growing up has impacted my writing.

When did you know you were a writer?

I wrote for myself for many years but it wasn’t until my brother spoke life to my gift a few years ago that I considered writing for someone other than myself.

What motivates you to write?

I am fascinated by the power of the written word. I like language and verbal expression. I love to bend a phrase and to impact emotionality with the words that are expressed. I like to conjure up visions from what has been scrolled across the page. That keeps me coming back to pen and paper to push myself to create. Reader response is also a huge motivator for me. The inboxes, emails, comments, reviews all give me strength when I’m in the writing process. It’s like fuel, you know?

How much of what you write is based on personal experiences?

A lot of what I write is pure imagination. I can hear or see something, even a single word or a small phrase and that will affect a whole story-line. My previous life as a social worker I think has impacted some of the stories that I tell; bearing witness to interesting and often chaotic family dynamics does offer a whole host of story ideas. I think some of me makes it into every story but not necessarily from personal experience.

What is your research process when preparing a post?

I tend to lean toward the positive and the humorous when posting. Because I love music, quite often I will start my post with lyrics from a song that have special meaning for me. I will research the lyrics to make sure I am quoting them accurately.

What genre do you read? What authors do you admire?

I love to read true crime stories, mysteries, high stakes drama and suspense. I admire Stephen King (anybody who knows me or has ever peeked at my bookshelf knows that). He has an incredible work ethic and is a prolific writer. He is always telling great stories and has a real passion for the work. Yep, he is my literary hero!

What advice would you give others about writing & in general?

As far as advice goes, I would say, be true to your authentic self. Don’t follow trends or mimic what someone else is doing. Be the writer that you were meant to be and the fruits of your labor will come from that.

What would you like people to know that they might not know already?

I am approachable, I am always stretching and learning, and I am to always deliver a thought provoking story.

Thanks so much Nikki for having me!

Yes, you are approachable! (smile) It is my privilege to have you in my Chat Chair. Thanks so much for dropping by and allowing us to get to know you a bit!

Hanna D. Spivey WAS in Nikki’s Chat Chair!

hannah spivey face pic Back in the day, I interviewed Hannah Spivey. If you are not familiar with her work, please click on the covers below; they are Amazon linked.  So grab a seat and relax while we learn more about Ms. Spivey!

hannah boldhannah my iveyhannah spivey whooty cashspivey front

Hi Hannah! Tell us something about you.

I have always been an imaginative since middle school. I was introverted as a young girl and experienced bullying from my peers.  I found comfort in being able to escape through my writing. My parents raised me in South Florida, and I have one sister. I obtained my Associate’s degree in Business Administration and today, I am a ghost and freelance writer, as well as a strong advocate against domestic violence.

What made you advocate against domestic violence?

Although I’ve never been physically abused, I was verbally abused as a kid.  I’ve tackled  loving and accepting myself. Writing a book gives me a voice and it also allows me to be a voice for those who have been abused or are still being abused, and are afraid to talk about their tumultuous experiences. I am much more expressive through my writing. Writing a book is a way for me to be free with no constraint and paint a picture for the readers.

It’s very courageous of you to have found a platform to help others. You told us you grew up in South Florida, where do you live now?

I live in Atlanta.

How was life growing up? How does it affect your writing?

Life had its’ ups and downs. I was a sheltered child. I believe I’ve always been a writer because I’ve always had a way with words and creativity. Writing was an escape route for me to take a walk on the wild side with my imagination and it still is. I started a journal when I was 24. I did things pretty late in life. My writing career spawned from a writing a journal and being inspired by other writers along with having a head full of untamed story ideas. I never planned to write a book when I was kid, but I did enjoy reading. Life is funny, isn’t it? Lol!

What motivates you to write?

Life, other writers, and my strange imagination.

How much of what you write is based on personal experiences?

I’m not sure but I just know some of it is based loosely on some of my personal experiences.

Share with us your writing process.

I don’t have one. I write whenever I feel like it, and when I do I listen to music.

You also work on the flip side of writing—the part that a lot of writers dread, but view as a necessary evil. What fuels your
passion for the marketing, publishing side?

Well, I enjoy marketing and promoting my book because prior to finding a publisher, I saw into the future. I didn’t see myself as “Just another author” and I still don’t. It’s not easy, of course. But marketing and promoting my book has helped increase my book sales as well as my relevance in the literary business, and I will not stop until my book reaches its full potential. I mean, this book has been compared to Precious when the protagonist in my novel Ebony the Beloved has been through far more hell than Precious can shake a stick at.

I’ve been able to do so many internet radio interviews that I’d run out of fingers and toes counting how many interviews I’ve done about my book, lol.  It is insane. “Ebony the Beloved” is my pride and joy; not because it is my first published book, but because it’s not like any other urban lit/contemporary book. It will piss you off, sadden you, and make you laugh.

That’s why I promote and market this book the way I do because I know it will do very well one day and it’s going to touch the lives of many people. It deals with domestic violence, child abuse, and bullying all together.  And I know many people will easily gravitate to it, especially if they’ve been abused by a significant other, parent, guardian, or sibling(s).

What genre do you read? What authors do you admire?

Contemporary fiction. I admire  Mary Monroe, Lashonda Devaughn, Tamika New house, Tracy Brown, and Kimberla Lawson Roby.

What advice would you give others about writing & in general?

I would tell them to keep honing their writing skills and read books to help hone their writing skills.

What would you like people to know that they might not know already?

Be wary of shady publishers, editors, graphic designers, and literary agents out there because most of them are greedy vultures. They only care about getting your money and throwing you to the lions. Do your homework and background check on anyone you want to work unless  you already know them. And even that doesn’t work all the time. Two words– be careful.

Finally, tell us what  you are working on and when can we expect a release?

I am working on my second novel called “The Bold and the Ugly Truth” hopefully it will be out in the summer.  I am very excited.

Can you tell us a little bit about “The Bold and the Ugly Truth”?

The Bold and the Ugly Truth” is about a rich and famous Televangelist who starts to question his Christianity. When he learns he’s a Hebrew Israelite, he begins trashing Christianity and attacking other notable televangelists.  This book is really going to step on a lot of toes, especially the televangelists who many of us are familiar with.

Hi Loretta.  I’m so happy to have you in my Chat Chair!  Tell  us something about you.

My weekday routine consists of me getting up at 4:30 a.m. and working on my publishing business until 6:00 a.m. Most of it ends up being checking emails, inquiries, and then writing. After that, I get my daughter up for school and start my normal part of the day. I work in Customer Service for a bowling company full-time and usually devote my lunch hour to writing or adjusting a manuscript, depending on what is needed at that time. On the weekends, I try to sleep in and enjoy connecting on Facebook and other sites to chat with readers and like-minded people in the industry. My family is very understanding about my writing; my husband is very supportive in all that I do.

Where are you from?  Where do you live now?

I’m from Central Islip, New York.  I now live in Richmond, VA.

How was life growing up? How does it affect your writing?

Being that I moved away from my hometown at age 13, writing allowed me the freedom to pour my feelings into the work. I felt that no one would understand where I was in my life (emotionally) at that time, so I used my characters to vent some of the things I couldn’t verbalize. I found that my inner voice was far stronger than speaking, and have been using it ever since. I didn’t find the time to journal as a teen, because the stories kept coming one after another. However, as an adult, I found myself writing more poetry to express my feelings, especially when I was in the military. I am a Veteran and served fifteen years, including a tour in Kuwait.

What a fascinating life!  What motivated you to start Nu Cherte Publishing?

I’d connected to a few publishers and was interested in signing with a particular one. Things just didn’t mesh at the time, making it more of a reason for me to learn about the business. Why should I wait on someone that wasn’t going to handle my work in a timely manner? I was always taught that if you want something done, you need to learn it for yourself. That put the ball in motion for me. The other layer to this was my mother passing away in December of 2005. She was a huge influence in my writing from the start. I took a little time off to reflect on my life with her and decided that if I was going to do this, it would be right. From the name representing my work, to the logo, it had to be stellar. After doing some research on publishing, it slowly started coming together and the day I paid for my business license bearing the name Nu Cherte (pronounced New Share-tay), which means “To Expose At A High Cost”…that made it real.

When did you know you were a writer?

I figured it out after I held my first paperback copy of “Spices of Life”.

I’m sure that was a revelation holding a book you’d written in your hands.

What genre do you write?

Urban Romance and Erotica Romance

What motivates you to write?

Everything! Conversation, observing people and just life in general. There are things we want to express but are too afraid to vocalize them. Writing is my outlet to explore freely.

 What genre do you read?

I read mostly romance novels, but I’m open to anything with a strong synopsis and interesting book cover.

Share with us your writing process.

I must do an outline. Once I have that out the way, it’s music and an open mind to write.

How much of what you write is based on personal experiences?

I’d say 20% of me, the rest is from listening to others. I like sprinkling real life situations into the stories I write.

Love that word ‘sprinkling’. What advice would you give others about writing?

It’s been said before, but I must repeat it: Learn the business! Research what it is you want to do. Expect to invest in your craft.  Nothing is for free; time is essential and there are good people in the industry. Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

What would you like people to know about you that they might not know already?

I’m always open to suggestions when it comes to a story line. My Embue series has taken off and it’s all because of the readers.  I thank you for that.

Finally, tell us what are you working on and when can we expect a release?

Currently I’m working on two projects, one slated for late summer 2013 and one for Spring 2014. My most recent release is from the
Tiffany Rivera series titled, The Majestic Dynasty.

Well I’m sure I speak for many when I say your projects are greatly anticipated!  Thanks so much for dropping by and giving us the opportunity to get to know you  better! It has been an honor to have you in my Chat Chair!

Who is Angelia Vernon Menchan?  What are your passions outside of writing?

Angelia Vernon Menchan is a wife, mother, mentor, writer and publisher who loves God, her family and life. Outside of writing my passions are mentoring, traveling, cooking and gardening.

Where are you from?

I was born in Ocala, Florida and now live in Jacksonville.

Tell me about life growing up. How does it affect your writing?

I was a studious girl who was considered mature for her age. There were years when my life was serene and other times filled with home turmoil. It filters into my work in that there are always those who have conflicted lives.

When did you know you were a writer?

What motivates you to write?

Life and that yearning, burning desire to bring characters to life.

How much of what you write is based on personal experiences?

It depends on what I’m writing. I’m sure that much that I’ve experienced some of it filters in but most is born of a vivid imaginative mind.

What is your research process when preparing a post?

Many of my posts are born of experiences. However I love researching so I will spend hours talking to people or Internet searching.

What genre do you read? What authors do you admire?

I read women’s fiction, spiritual fiction, nonfiction, young adult fiction and contemporary romantic fiction. My favorite authors are Colin Channer, Pearl Cleage, Diane McKinney whetstone, but I enjoy a huge range of authors.

What advice would you give others about writing & in general?

Writing is a solo process that involves dedication to the story and the craft but always be open to constructive criticism and develop a thick skin, everyone will not love your books. Every book isn’t for everyone. Also develop your own voice.

What would you like people to know that they might not know already?

I’m sure people know this, but I cannot reinforce enough that careers in writing are built slowly. It’s not nor should it be a get rich quick schematic. Build your craft and your audience. Also treat readers well.

It has been an honor to have you in my Chat Chair! I hope you will come back again!  Please continue to follow Angelia on Twitteron her blogFacebook, and on her Amazon page

  Check out the excerpt below!

Kenneth Wilkerson, baseball’s MVP of breaking hearts isn’t in Craymont looking for complications. With an injury that has him sidelined from the game he loves, and the latest scandal in his wake involving a woman who is very much engaged to someone else, the last thing he needs is to get mixed up with Paige Scott.

Paige Scott, a former party-girl, has a very murky past and even murkier relationship with Kenneth’s best friend Carlos Ortiz. Paige knows Carlos watched her go from it girl to broken and when she finally healed, he made it clear to her that he would not step aside to let another man in just to do it again.

But Kenneth lets nothing stand between him and what he loves.

Love for the game… his family… and her.

tia 1PLAYING FOR LOVE is the first novel from the Wilkersons in Love series. Tia Kelly invites you to come meet the Wilkersons and get ready to fall in love.

“Open the door, Paige,” Kenneth demanded in between knocks.

He pulled up just in time to see her walk into her front door. His athlete’s reflexes were not enough to make it before she slammed it in his face.

Finally the door swung open. “I need you to leave.”

Kenneth pushed himself inside and reached out to tilt her face upward. He felt the dampness on her skin and felt worse.

“I probably shouldn’t have left, but I didn’t know what to expect after last night.”

Paige pulled back, wrapping her arms around herself. “You didn’t know? Or didn’t care.”

Kenneth leaned against the wall and let his head fall back. “Paige, you were drunk.”

“And that makes this better?”

“No, it doesn’t.”

He looked at her while she took a seat at the bottom of her steps.

“Why did you do that?”

Paige looked away, chewing nervously on her lip while tugging at her shirtsleeve. “I don’t know.”

“I think you do.”

“Is that what you do? Psychoanalyze the women you sleep with the morning after?”

“Paige, I don’t have any regrets about last night except for one.”

She looked up and searched his face to prepare her for what he was about to say. “And that is?”

“That I was the only one that actually wanted to be there.”

Paige pulled back and stared at him. “You make it sound like I used you.”

“Didn’t you?”

Paige huffed. “We have to work together until you’re released back to your team. I can’t have this conversation with you every time we cross paths.”

“And you won’t.” He stared back to her and sat on the staircase next to her. “Look at me, Paige.”

She glanced up, releasing the edge of her sleeve. Her expectancy and uncertainty warned him that whatever he had to say, he needed to be careful in how he delivered it.

“Typically, I don’t care about what happens the morning after, but there’s something in your eyes that tells me last night was more than just a one nighter for you.”

“What makes you think that?”

“Because last night scared me, too.”

See what I mean?
